30 Years of Silica

The Story Behind Our Iconic Mud Mask: A conversation with Ása Brynjólfsdóttir director of Research and Development.

It all started with Silica Mud Mask. In the 1970s, shortly after the Blue Lagoon formed in a lava field on the Reykjanes Peninsula, Icelandic locals discovered the milky-blue waters' skin-healing properties.

By 1987, scientific studies confirmed why: the geothermal seawater was exceptionally rich in minerals, particularly silica. This discovery led to the founding of the Blue Lagoon Research & Development Center in 1993. Scientists, including Ása Brynjólfsdóttir—now the Director of Research & Development for Blue Lagoon Iceland—began exploring how silica-rich water benefits the skin.

In 1995, Blue Lagoon Skincare was born, with the Silica Mud Mask as its first product. Over the last 30 years, the mask has gained worldwide recognition as a symbol of Icelandic beauty.

“The Blue Lagoon is a natural wonder recognized by National Geographic, and the Silica Mud Mask is like taking a piece of that wonder home,” says Brynjólfsdóttir. “Its universal appeal lies in its deep connection to the lagoon’s essence. It transcends borders and generations because it offers both an authentic Icelandic experience and effective, natural skincare.”

Here, Brynjólfsdóttir shares the history of the Silica Mud Mask, its evolution, and what makes it an enduring skincare icon.

Take us back to the beginning. What inspired the creation of the Silica Mud Mask, and what challenges did you face in developing it?

The Silica Mud Mask was born out of a genuine need from our patients. People visiting the Blue Lagoon's medical clinic for psoriasis treatments, which involved bathing in the silica-rich waters, began asking for a way to take the silica home to continue their care. It was a natural step for us to create the mask in response to their requests. The main challenge back then was figuring out how to translate this natural, dynamic resource into a stable, high-quality skincare product, while maintaining its unique properties.

How did you discover the unique properties of silica, and what made it the foundation of the brand's first product?

When the lagoon formed in 1976, its brilliant blue waters immediately captured attention. Researchers quickly discovered that the unique hue came from the high silica content in the water. The silica also settled as mud at the lagoon’s bottom. Early clinical studies by dermatologists documented the benefits of silica-rich water for psoriasis patients. As word spread, our patients expressed interest in taking those benefits home. That synergy—between patient demand and research—was the catalyst for our skincare line, which started with the Silica Mud Mask.

What was the initial response to the Silica Mud Mask when it launched 30 years ago, and how has it evolved into a global skincare icon?

The response was overwhelmingly positive. For our patients, it was like taking a piece of the Blue Lagoon home. Over time, the mask became more than just a skincare product; it became a cherished souvenir—a connection to the unique experience of visiting the lagoon. Today, it’s much more than that. Its patented ingredients are celebrated for their ability to strengthen and protect the skin, enhance skin barrier function, and lock in moisture. Silica mud’s deep-cleansing and purifying properties have made it a globally recognized skincare essential, often called the “white wonder” for its unique benefits.

Could you explain the sustainable harvesting process of the silica and its importance to the brand's ethos?

Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. The silica is harvested at our R&D center using a natural process. We cool geothermal water using Iceland’s brisk, cold weather, which induces the silica to precipitate. This geothermal resource is renewable, and we see it as our responsibility to ensure that it remains in good condition for future generations. Sustainability isn’t just a commitment—it’s a core part of who we are as a brand.

How has the science behind the mask changed or advanced over the years?

Thanks to scientific advancements, our understanding of how silica benefits the skin has improved. However, the formula itself has remained remarkably timeless. The Silica Mud Mask is primarily composed of silica mud and has only undergone slight adjustments to accommodate changes in packaging or preservation methods. Its simplicity—using very few ingredients—has been key to its stability and effectiveness over the years.

What has it been like to see the mask become a symbol of Icelandic beauty and gain worldwide recognition?

It’s a source of immense pride. The mask allows us to share the magic of the lagoon with the world, showcasing the best of Icelandic nature and science. Seeing it recognized globally as a symbol of Icelandic beauty is incredibly rewarding.

Can you share a particularly memorable moment or milestone in the product’s 30-year history?

One moment that has always stayed with me is when Professor Jean Krutmann, the dermatologist leading the studies on the bioactives of the lagoon—specifically the silica and microalgae—shared the results of his research. He looked at me and said, “This is the perfect anti-aging potion!” I’ll never forget that moment. It was a turning point for us, solidifying the groundbreaking discovery that silica and microalgae strengthen the skin barrier but also stimulate our cells to produce collagen. That realization shaped the future of our products and underscored the lagoon’s unique potential to revolutionize skincare.

Reflecting on your journey with Blue Lagoon Skincare, what are you most proud of, and what do you envision for the next 30 years of the brand?

I’m incredibly proud of how we’ve harnessed the lagoon’s ecosystem to create something that benefits people worldwide, while staying true to our roots in sustainability and research. Looking ahead, I envision continued exploration of the lagoon’s bioactive properties, unlocking new discoveries, and innovating products that bring its benefits to more people around the globe.
