The Power of Water

The Power of Water

Water is mysterious. Possibly the most amazing thing on our planet. Water is part of life. It is all around us. It is within us and it is the energy source to all living things. We cannot survive without it. But how often do we stop and think about the power of water? About just how beneficial it can be and how privileged it is to be able to enjoy it every day, taking it almost for granted.

There is almost nowhere in the world where water is so mysterious, so powerful and so beneficial than in the Blue Lagoon. The Blue Lagoon is founded on water, water that turned the site into one of the world's top travel destinations. And, in 2012, saw it become one of National Geographic's 25 Wonders of the Modern World.

The beneficial effects of the Blue Lagoon

In 1976, the Svartsengi geothermal power plant opened, a pioneer of its kind. A warm blue reservoir formed in its shadow and within five years, local residents began bathing in the waters of the lagoon. They reported great beneficial effect on their skin after bathing, especially people with skin conditions, such as psoriasis, experimented relief in their symptoms and significant comfort to their sensitive dry skin. Their revitalized skin sensations and the great wellness of body and mind soon aroused interest of the scientists about these unexplored properties of the water.

In 1992, the Blue Lagoon company began its path to explore this mystical blue water, to research the beneficial effects of the water and its primary elements - silica, microalgae, and minerals.

How to bring the beneficial properties of the water to people?

The mission of scientists and researchers was to discover the secrets hidden in such a unique composition of the water, to understand its effectiveness on the skin. The desire of improving people's quality of life and researching the healing water was the basis of all studies. In 1994, clinical studies confirmed the healing properties of the Blue Lagoon geothermal seawater – which today we refer to it as the Blue Lagoon bioactive water due to its established bioactive properties. Same year, the Blue Lagoon company opened a Medical Clinic to welcome people with psoriasis to a natural psoriasis treatment. At that time, the guests at the Blue Lagoon Medical Clinic soon showed interest in following the treatment at home. This interest sparked the product development of Blue Lagoon dermatological treatment products - a dedicated line of products for dry, sensitive skin.

Today, the Blue Lagoon offers a range of skincare products truly close to the needs of the skin. Visitors to the Blue Lagoon can enjoy these skincare products in the Blue Lagoon Spa or purchase them in the flagship store.

The entire range of products is also available in the Blue Lagoon online store, to easily reach users all over the world.

How did the Blue Lagoon bioactive water originate?

Gentle puffs of steam billowing from the surface, bathers relaxing and a cloudless sky - everything seems peaceful on the surface. But, below the earth, seawater and freshwater travel through porous lava and get enriched of minerals before merging in a volcanic aquifer at 2000 m depth and 240°C to form a uniquely composed and mineral-rich geothermal seawater. There occurs an interplay between heat and extreme pressure due to the extreme geothermal activity of the location. Extraction wells draw the geothermal seawater from the renewable geothermal source to the surface, where it is used for multiple value creation: to power clean energy for local housing and industry, to form the Blue Lagoon and for sourcing bioactive ingredients with sustainable methods at the R&D Center for use in skincare.

A unique ecosystem has developed in the Blue Lagoon. An ecosystem of bioactive elements – silica, microalgae, and minerals - that heal, rejuvenate, enrich, and nourish the body and soul. Because of these bioactive elements – the water is called Blue Lagoon bioactive water.

Water facts

Colour: the iconic blue colour is the result of silica reflecting sunlight.

Temperature: the temperature of the lagoon is a luxurious 37-39° C.

Mixture: The Blue Lagoon is a complex ecosystem, rich in minerals, silica, and microalgae. A unique and mysterious entity called Blue Lagoon bioactive water.

The bioactive elements of the Blue Lagoon

The bioactives present in the lagoon's ecosystem include silica, microalgae, and mineral salts. These elements are sustainably sourced from a geothermal source for use exclusively in Blue Lagoon skincare products targeting different skincare needs.

Silica

The silica gives the Blue Lagoon bioactive water its characteristic blue color and precipitates naturally as a mud. In its natural white silica mud form, the iconic element is renowned worldwide as a “white wonder” for the skin. In 1995, the first Blue Lagoon skincare product was launched: Silica Mud Mask. This product has been one of the most popular products from the Blue Lagoon ever since.

Used as a bioactive ingredient in skincare, the BLUE LAGOON SILICA is sustainably sourced from a geothermal source at the Blue Lagoon R&D Center in Iceland. A unique Icelandic skincare ingredient that can be exclusively found in Blue Lagoon skincare products.

Microalgae

Native to the Blue Lagoon bioactive water and its ecosystem, studies have revealed that the Blue Lagoon's blue-green microalgae is unique for use in skincare. Patented for its bioactive properties and beneficial skincare effect, BLUE LAGOON MICROALGAE is now harvested from a sustainable geothermal source and cultivated at the Blue Lagoon R&D Center in Iceland with pioneering technology.

Minerals

Blue Lagoon bioactive water is rich in over 20 minerals. The unique array of minerals adds to the water's unique and powerful composition, contributing to its efficacy and granting healing and rejuvenating effects. The pure mineral crystals are used in Blue Lagoon Skincare to soothe and revitalize skin.

The role of bioactive water within Blue Lagoon skincare products

How can these elements that make the bioactive water so beneficial become an integral part of the range of skincare products? Thanks to the studies and research of the Blue Lagoon R&D department, the entire range of products can respond to specific skin needs, in particular:

  • Stimulate collagen production: Skin losing its elasticity and joints stiffening are signs that the body is producing less collagen. The BLUE LAGOON MICROALGAE bioactive anti-aging component stimulate collagen production helping skin cells to renew and repair themselves.
  • Strengthen the skin barrier: The silica mud of the waters prevents trans-epidermal water loss. Used as BLUE LAGOON SILICA in skincare formulations to improve the skin’s barrier function - helping skin to retain better moisture. The skin looks fresh and feels soft while being more resistant to premature wrinkles and fine lines. Having a strong skin barrier is also important in the prevention and treatment of psoriasis.
  • Revitalize the skin and hair: As well as preventing moisture loss, the Blue Lagoon bioactive water also helps strengthen and renew the skin. Circulation is stimulated to give a radiant appearance.
  • Prevent premature skin ageing: The combination of microalgae and silica helps activate genes that protect the skin, slowing down skin ageing. This works alongside the water's stimulating and revitalizing effects to give healthy, glowing, and youthful skin.
